Everybody loves Usop Wilcha!

Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah (HKLBR) the movie is such a hit! Produced and directed by Mamat Khalid, the comedy thriller is hilarious especially with the presence of the movie’s strongest character – Usop Wilcha (wheel chair).

People on the streets are using his outstanding signature line with signature hand wave “KITA BAKOR AJE! KITA BAKOR AJE!” (Let’s just burn it! Let’s just burn it) in their daily conversations. Even Miki can say it, except he can’t pronounce “bakor”, he can only say “bakar”. Very KL eh? Haha

Usop Wilcha

Unlike Miki, my tongue is made for Perak accent, especially from the Kuala Kangsar district just like that used in most Mamat Khalid’s movies. Last Friday in Maharaja Lawak ( Fridays 10pm, Astro Warna), a contestant from Borneo, Alex used a very thick Kuale accent in his punch line “Mane mau nye!?” (It won’t work!)

I laughed heartily when he said that and a warm surge of memories swept over me. I was born in Ipoh in 1982 ( I just turned 29 last Saturday). My aunt and grandparents took care of me until I was 12 in Kuala Kangsar because my parents were working. After UPSR, despite getting 3A 1B, I didn’t manage to secure any place in any boarding school, so my mom took me to Penang so that I can study in St George’s Girls’ School. Well, that’s a pretty good school on the island.

So for the first 12 years in my life I conversed in nothing but exactly like Usop Wilcha. In my early days im Penang, I bet many of my new friends found my speech very awkward. Just imagine it was as though one of the cast of HKLBR got lost in Abdul Razak Mohaideen’s Anak Mami The Movie. Come to think about it… It must have been really hilarious.

I remember vividly how my dear beautiful friend Naziawaty once laughed out loud when used the term “Tak mau nye!” very much similar to the line Alex used last Friday. I laughed too.. I remember… We were in form 2. Despite the itik serati talking to itik angsa, I blended in very well, I still have great many friends and by the end of Form 2… I could already talk ala Mami Jarum with my head goyang-goyang left righ left right! Ahahaha!

Like many of us, my secondary school years were glorious! It was so much fun and probably the years that I spent learning most about life. Without SGGS, I wouldn’t be what I am right now.

I read an article about Usop Wilcha in Harian Metro recently. Apparently, Usop or his real name, Syed Mohamad Asri Syed Osman Jamalullail has a full time job and he is actually a Corporate Communications Manager in an oil and gas (O&G) giant. He is educated, very professional and of course, his hometown is Kuala Kangsar.
