I just received an e-mail that questions Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor’s position as the Malaysian Astronaut. This is due to the information on NASA website, where they are not calling him an astronaut but a Spaceflight Participant. While reading that e-mail, I realize that they’re still some people out there that strongly believe that they are so bloody smart but actually so goddamn stupid!! Keep complaining about almost everything just because it is not them. Or maybe he/she was also one of those people that had tried their luck during the selection but failed miserably!.
In my opinion, whatever you would like to call him..or NASA called him…he is still going to space and he’s still going to be our first astronaut!!

Why do I say that?…

Based on Wikipedia,

An astronaut or cosmonaut is a person trained by a human spaceflight program to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft. While generally reserved for professional space travelers, the term is sometimes applied to anyone who travels into space, including scientists, politicians, journalists, and tourists.

NASA didn’t use the term astronaut for him because it’s not his full time profession. The title Astronaut is reserved to a professional space traveler that works with NASA only. It is also same with most of us…we play football everyday and participate in amateur league every weekend just like a professional but nobody will call us as footballer because it is not our actual profession. Do you comprehend?

Before this, many people label this program as a waste of taxpayer’s money. I do agree with that, however, it’s the better way of flushing money because the money is wasted for the sake of the future generation rather than wasting it to those  unnecessary submarines or bailing out of crony’s company.

And because our young Malaysians desperately need a new hero. A hero that can change their perception of their own nation. A hero that will make them love knowledge and science rather than dancing and singing. Young Malaysians has been exposed to too much of Akademi Fantasia, Mawi and Siti Nurhaliza. Its ruining our national vision of being a mighty nation in the future. If every child dreams of  becoming Mawi, what is the consequences to our generation in the future?

The space program is a good one because it triggers children’s love of science, spaceships and choosing a person like Dr. Sheikh Muzaphar as our first astronaut will make it even better because he has the looks of a movie’s star and at the same time he is highly educated. He will make a perfect hero for our younger generation!

Its funny when thinking about these shallow people. They can condemn the Angkasawan program that will send the first Malaysian into space in history and yet when Siti Nurhaliza get to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, they are feeling very proud.

Good luck to our first Angkasawan! He will be launched with Expedition 16 to Space Station on 10 October 2007 by using Soyuz spacecraft together with 5 others Russian, NASA and ESA astronauts. Since he will never stay at Space Station as long as others, he will going back with Expedition 15 crew members.

Maybe he’s only a space tourist for this time around..but it is going to be our nation’s first  step towards space exploration…

  7. Oh..aku mengambil kesempatan rujuk pada Kamus Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka maksud “astronaut – orang yg dilatih utk mengendalikan pesawat angkasa, angkasawan.” sebagai makluman saje..keh keh keh.. :sinchan:

  11. assalamualaikum.saya sangat kagum dengan dr.sekarang ni saya form 5 dalam aliran sains dan bercita2 nak sambung belajar dalam bidang aerospaces engineering.semuanya semangat daripada idola saya.insyallah saya juga bakal menjejakkan kaki ke angkasa..

    kalu dulu2….sapa2 pernah cakap pasal nak pegi angkasa masa kat sekolah..semua akan gelak dan cakap..jangan nak mimpi la…
    kalu sekarang..tadak sapa boleh gelak kat mimpi2 macam tu..

    best student sekolah saya dulu pernah taip kat e-mail sperti dibawah…aku harap dia tak marah aku sebab letak kat sini…

    “Yang aku tak lupa jugak ialah masa trial SPM tahun 19**, aku ada buat karangan tentang fikiran seorang pejuang yang sedang dalam perjalanan untuk mememui mautnya selepas pesawatnya menjunam dari angkasa akibat kena tembak. Aku dapat A1 untuk BM kertas 1 tahun tu. Bukan nak riak tapi aku nak share dengan hangpa yang kalau kerja yang kita buat tu lahir dari hati nurani kita, maka hasilnya adalah kecemerlangan.     Hangpa semua mungkin tak tau yang aku hampir-hampir menolak untuk mengisi borang biasiswa selepas trial SPM semata-mata kerana bidang astronomi tidak ditawarkan oleh Petronas. Nasib baik Cikgu Md Hashim nasihat aku untuk pilih cita-cita kedua aku iaitu menjadi seorang ahli kajibumi.

    Aku cerita semua ni sebab aku rasa menjadi angkasawan adalah impian ramai budak-budak zaman dulu maupun sekarang.. sebelum depa tukar untuk jadi penyanyi, pelakon, model atau apa-apa lagi profesyen lain yang dipengaruhi oleh keinginan nak jadi glamour semata-mata.

    Jadi, walau apa pun pandangan aku terhadap kerajaan sekarang, aku mengakui yang program angkasawan Malaysia ni penting untuk semai balik cita-cita yang tinggi kepada budak-budak la ni yang aku rasa dah tak tau arah tuju depa. Takut aku bila tengok budak-budak muda yang dah tak tau malu kat KLCC hari-hari.

    Memang kosnya agak tinggi, tapi sapa nak bagi pi angkasa kalau bayaq ciput. Lagipun progam ni lagi baik daripada bagi duit kat orang nak berenang selat Inggeris atau naik ke gunung Everest yang aku tak nampak apa-apa kebaikkan selain menaikkan nama bangsa saja. Sekurang-kurangnya yang pergi ke angkasa ni boleh menjalankan kajian saintifik untuk kebaikkan sejagat. “

  18. so funny. mmg la dia tu astronaut. pemikiran rakyat malaysia mmg cam tu, sapa yg da pegi angkasa, da jd angkasawan@astronaut. sama la cam sapa yg ada 1jota da jd jotawan.
    program nih sgt membazir duit rakyat. xde gunenya ramai org berdreaming nk gi angkasa kalo x bangunkan aerospace kat malaysia ni dlu. sampi bila nk tumpang jd ‘space participant’ kat kapal org?
    pas tu buat reasearch ntah ape2 kat atas tu. apa yg dia da sumbangkn kat negara?

  19. xde gunanya klu anak2 muda kita dreaming utk ke angkasa kalau xde inisiatif utk bangunkan industri aeroangkasa yg sebenar! sending angkasawan is not the right way to develop the aerospace industry… Malaysia should send engineers and scientists to Russia to learn their technologies.. so that one day we can develop our own space shuttle and then we think of sending our angkasawan to space. that is the right way!

    we should not just use shortcut to space.. that is so wrong..!

  21. but dreaming is just not enough.. coz when i was young, i also dream of all these star wars, space n stuff.. until i got myself a degree in aerospace eng.. and now when i came back to malaysia.. seeking for jobs in related industry, i realized that there’s not much for aerospace industries..

  29. a`kum dr sheikh macam mana best tak duk kat angkasa lepas mesti dpt banyak pengetahuan. sebenarnya saya ni pelajar smk mahsuri lgkwi. kami ini minat sangat untuk menjemput dr ke sekolah kami untuk memberikan motivasi. mungkin sedikt sebanyak dpt memberikan semangat untuk belajar. maklumlah dr ni kan idola remja perempuan masa kini . tapi jgn risau di sini semuanya minat akn dr. saya harap sgt dr dpt dtg semula ke lgkw untuk memberikan azam baru pada anak2 didik lgkwi. hope i will see you in langkawi. reporter smk mahsuri.
